For Sale – Scherzer Rotary Valve Bb Trumpet – Model 8218W-L

I am selling my Scherzer rotary Bb trumpet. This instrument is Scherzer’s take on the Monke (Köln) design, having a larger bell and a slightly wider bore than some rotary trumpets, although still a lot smaller bore than a piston valve instrument.

It has two tuning slides. The first has Vienna Keys for A and C with the water key acting as a D key. The second slide just has the water key.

The third valve has a trigger and is vented so you can release the trigger and the slide will close without a vacuum, avoiding a pop when you use the third valve next time.

It sounds incredible when you hit the gas on it. The sound never really gets harsh, just bigger.

The Keys

These shorten the instrument, move the partials further apart and make it easier to hit certain notes in the middle, especially at low dynamics.

The correct term for these is Überblasklappen (“over blowing keys”).
Vienna Key refers to the C key which was added by Viennese trumpeters.

Here are the notes they can be used for:

D – (bottom -water key) – D’’’, Bb’’, F’’’
C – (Top) (nearest bell) – C’’’, Ab’’, Eb’’’
A – (Middle) (middle of tuning slide) – A’’, C#’’’, E’’’

Other accessories

Four interchangeable leadpipes and a storage case for these.
The instrument is in a B&S branded case. This is the case it was supplied in by Scherzer. It is the same company.
Leather Specialities bell guard/grip. Not really necessary but I felt it made it easier to grip.
There is no mouthpiece supplied. It needs a deep trumpet cup with a slightly bigger throat to get the best out of it. Ideally something a little V shaped.

Condition

The instrument has been used quite a lot, but has retained all of its lacquer apart from a small loss where the leadpipe was modified (see below). It has been well maintained with proper regular oiling.

Modification

I had a clamp fitted to the leadpipe receiver. This stops the interchangeable leadpipes from pulling out when you remove the mouthpiece and prevents mouthpieces sticking. It is a very common modification on these instruments. The clamp is raw brass and there was a little plating loss where it was done. This also improves the acoustic performance of the instrument because the leadpipe is properly fixed together rather than floating on a grease layer.
